Authentique Keeler Estate Chardonnay 2014

Tasting Notes

A poised, moderately endowed Chardonnay with aromatic aromas of toasted brioche and spice fleshed out with honeydew and white flowers. The palate is more elegant and restrained than the nose suggests, giving way to appealing summer fruits and a lifted but expansive mouth feel. Drink 2016 - 2021.

Production Area

The soils on Authentique's eponymously named hillside vineyard are diverse, giving distinct personality to each block. The quality and diversity of their soil types are unprecedented and are comprised of Steiwer, Chehulpum, Hazelair and Shallow Sedimentary soils with underlying remnants of an ancient ocean bed. Some blocks have virtually no topsoil and consist of sand stone full of fossilized sea creatures and mollusks. The Chardonnay vines are planted on their own rootstocks and are comprised of Dijon clones 76, 95 and 96. Only a few rows are planted to clone 44 which are sprinkled on the top of the full harvest bins.

Details of Harvest

2014 started off with a warm spring and summer with no heat spikes. All of this easy weather caused earlier flowering and hence one of the earliest harvests on record, which also occurred during the warmer period of the growing season - the beginning of September. The wines tend to be more full-bodied than usual with lots of upfront fruit but with more freshness and restraint than 2009, the last hotter year.

Vinification Process

Hand picked, barrel-fermented Chardonnay with indigenous and commercial yeasts. 100% malolactic fermentation. Stirring of the lees in the first six months. 18 month maturation in new medium-toast Tronçais, Fontainebleau and neutral French oak barrels of which 40% are new.
